Living Landmarks & Surrey CC August
2005 The Angel project has been extended somewhat from the original £2M project to a mere £60M - £75M project. Please see the following email for a brief outline of the revised ‘Angel’ project. Email from Neil White: Dear Colleagues, The programme is split into two; the first part is awarding a small number of grants between £10 and 25 million to projects of regional significance, while the second part is a single grant of £25 - 50 million to a project of regional or national significance. Statutory authorities are eligible to apply for this funding, along with the voluntary and community sector, public or private limited companies and individuals. The type of projects they are looking for are Iconic, like the Eden Project, Angel of the North, landscape projects, bridges, etc. They can fund capital as well as some revenue, and will consider buildings as well as landscape projects. The catch is that the applicant has to put up 25% match--funding. They are also looking for partnership working under this programme, and persumably this would involve County Council's working with others. My reason for emailing is that you, or somebody within your network, may have some ideas for a possible bid, either within your own organisation, or by working in partnership with others. To obtain a copy of the programme application pack please go to the Big Lottery Fund website to download the forms. Their address is http://www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/programmes/living/index.htm Alternatively, you can call 0845 0 10 11 12 for an application pack. Initial applications have to be submitted to the Big Lottery Fund by the 6 January 2006. Please feel free to get back to me if you have any ideas you want to discuss - I look forward to hearing from you soon. Many thanks Although the National Lottery initially proposed the ‘Living Landmarks Competition’ in June 2005, Surrey CC couldn’t get their ‘act’ or the inevitable ‘meeting’ together until mid November 2005. Considering that the deadline was 6th January 2006, what with Christmas & New Year, it didn’t leave much time to discuss or organise any form of proposal for an entry to the competition. For the past 6 years I have
attempted to promote and produce the Angel Gate Project,
so far
unsuccessfully, mainly due to the lack of funding and in particular Mole
Valley DC’s perverse attitude,
to wit; “We don’t want anything controversial on our patch, thank you
very much!” Mole Valley District Council is stockbroker belt and probably the most affluent and conservative local councils in the UK; and therefore denied National Lottery Funding. However North Leatherhead along with Ashstead; (under the jurisdiction of MVDC) just down the road (M25) are officially classified as a ‘Deprived Area’ over-run with juvenile and car crime, which Mole Valley DC studiously ignore.
